 It is often said that the journey of a lifetime starts with the turning of a page. Reading is an inevitable part of our day-to-day life. Every day, we read a lot of things knowingly or unknowingly from magazines, newspapers and books to text messages, signboards and directions. So what is the purpose of reading? Why do we read?

   Gaining knowledge is considered as one of the main objectives of reading. Be it newspaper that provides information above daily events or other books that provides information about various subjects, the purpose is to gain knowledge or information.

   Another purpose of reading is for pleasure or enjoyment. We do read novels, poem, stories and certain magazines for entertainment purposes. Reading takes away the boredom of the busy day life by taking us to imaginary worlds and far away galaxies.

   Reading improves our vocabulary thereby improving our wring skills and speaking skills. As a result, a good reader will be a good thinker with great vocabulary skills. Reading helps us in exploring new, intresting and unique words and phrases.

   Reading helps us to see the various perspectives of a specific topic. Most of the times, people tend to stick on to their own opinions and beliefs. Reading throws light into different perspectives, dimensions and viewpoints of the same topic thereby giving a comprehensive idea about the topic. This increases our critical thinking skills.

   Reading improves ones imaginative and thinking skills. A person who reads a lot can think a lot and can do things in more creative and innovative ways. You can also gain a lot of informations for practical applications too.For example, you read signboards and directions to navigate to a particular place, you read a recipe to prepare a certain dish and you read certain sets of informations or guidelines.

  Reading has significant role in a persons day to day life. It helps in the personal development of an individual. It is said that a person who reads live a thousand lives and moreover, helps in the all in all development of a person.
