Castaway by Alphonsa Biju

Image
A few people who got struck within the middle of the vast sea, was able to reach back to their own land even after being in so much difficulties and hardships. This incident depicts the depth of hope and unity when all other door seems to be closed. They were able to get back only when they joined shoulder to shoulder amidst the tough times. At last, when compassion and union let them sparkle, it was not just their life that they regained, instead, the worth of humanity and the bond of unity which makes this whole universe to move forth. Bravery is the ability to confront something painful or difficult or dangerous without any fear. It's a quality, not a state of mind; it doesn't need a cause to awaken it....Courage, on the other hand, is the ability to confront something painful or difficult or dangerous despite any fear.

Reading the article titled "Castaway" from the  Times of India, a lot of things passed through my mind which I can only filter with a pen. I surely learned a few things that I will keep in mind for the rest of my life.  Taking a glimpse of what Desappan and his crew had gone through, the first thing I realised was off the risk present in every job and the situations where a person would have to stare death in the eye and say "not yet", with all the strength.  Another important point is the ability to improvise, even when it seems that we have lost everything. Just like Babu, whose courage and strength, Desappan spoke highly of is an example of someone who gets upto the challengeand give people hope.  Optimism is something else, it is clear from how Babu, one man among a team of nine changed the minds of the other eight men. And another important thing was improvisation, to use everything one has, just like how the fishermen had to use their resources to turn a setba

Reading the article titled "castaway" from the Times of india, a lot of things passed through my mind.              Those nine men were surviving the Bay of Bengal even without having anything to satisfy their hunger and thirst. As days passed there was no food left.they even forced to drink salty sea water. Just like babu, whose courage snd strength , desappan gave the light of hope to other people in his crew. At last after these helplessness days they got help from natives of myanmer.             Even the unbrave people become brave when they united. When the people  of Mynamar rescued them and resolved their necessities more beyond, the sacrifice of one among them to save his companisons is commentable. In mercy of the waves- By Sanjana Saji Nair

Even a single day without proper food and shelter would be like a nightmare to us. But these men, spending more than a month in the sea not knowing what will happen the next moment was indeed really audacious. Little did that team with nine members knew that they would get stuck in the middle of the roaring waves for the next 56 days of their life. Everything that was possible to sustain their lives slowly started getting exhausted. Without any connection with the world outside, they remained the boat watching death nearing them. But at last their sincere hope and prayers took them to the land where they saw God's presence. Unfortunately the one who was called the daredevil of the group was not there to accompany them. His dareness took him to the depths of the sea. The rest, see this as their second life that they got as a blessing from the saviour above.

Being stranded at the sea for about fifty five days seems to be a marvel, right? I did felt the same until I came across the column of a national daily today. "Castaway" which vividly elaborates the tale of nine men from Chennai adrift in the Bay of Bengal not just chronicles their luck but the trials and tribulations for survival in the mighty sea too. Had the men regretted upon their fate alone and gave up, they may never ever see the sunrise again. In the time of severe threat, they  together tackled that poignant yet precarious circumstance by exhibiting commendable austerity.                             They relied upon the exotic catch onboard, the crew eating one or two  sparse meals a day, they ran out of food within two weeks threw light on the harshness of hunger and the intensity of havoc that they were facing. Despite the obstacles that stormed their way, their invincible spirit and will won over their fate. It's heart rending to read that Babu - their fierce c

She was shortlisted in the '100 inspirational women of 2015 by BBC' and 'Forbes under 30list for 2016'.    'Turning adversity into opportunity' was a talk delivered by her in a Ted X event in 2015. In 2007, at the age of 21, she met with an accident which made her paraplegic. She had to spend two and a half months in a hospital bed. Those days were dreadful and she underwent severe pain both physically and mentally. She was devastated and felt that life was completely pointless, aimless, and colorless when people who were supposed to stay with her had left when she needed them the most. But at one point she realized that she had people around her to see her alive and so much to be grateful for. At that point, she started to repaint her life. With the deformed hand, she started to paint in the hospital bed and it helped her to explore the artist hidden in h

55 Days Between Life and Death by Sandra Cyriac

The news of the return of 8 fishermen from Chennai who went missing in the Bay of Bengal for 56 days made the headlines in the newspapers today. The team of 9 who got on to the sea for fishing was adrift as the boat's engine crashed. The next 55 days were of utter misery for them that they didn't have adequate food or water. They were all listless that they slept all day.  All these days, they were at the mercy of the sea that they felt each day they went nearer the shore of death. Even though there was no scope for any hope, they were not ready to give up. They signalled at each and every boat that passed by and finally, on the 56th day they were ashore in Myanmar. In an attempt to repair the engine on of them disappeared underwater and on October 7th rest of them managed to reach Chennai.  They are extremely thankful to God for this second life. Still, they have to go to the sea risking their lives to sustain their families.    Even in the middle of such an apprehensive cris

How she became an IAS officer?

The ted talk speech that I have watched recently is the speech by Ms. Surabhi Gautam titled “How she became an IAS officer”. In the speech she shares her extraordinary journey of transition from being a naive  young village girl to someone who has cracked the most toughest examinations conducted across India. She had also secured AIR fifty in the coveted Civil Services exam 2016 and secured IAS in the first attempt itself. She hails from a village in Madhya Pradesh where there was no access to better educational facilities, electricity and transport. Perhaps, she belongs to a giant and joint brahmin family which consisted about thirty plus members. She was raised in an environment where it was believed that imparting education to girls is of no use. But her parents succeeded in providing their child with better education.    She comments that her mother was someone who has always insisted her to bring out the best of abilities in her. She ignited Surabhi’s dreams. But her journey tow

Sometimes our life may castaway from our family, career, relationship or even our friendship too. But here some men who are castaway from their entire lives. They could even see their death in front of all their eyes.  But they never left their hope. Unless how long we should hope? The answer is that we should wait till the end. There is a quote by famous American actor Christopher Reeve - "once we choose hope, anything is possible".                 Look at these people, how they are blessed. A rain that should have turned a curse was turned into a blessing. So always God had  plans to prosper you and not to harm you. It is no matter whatever the situation;it is your desire and courage to win the race. And it's your duty to keep your willpower till the end.

"Water water everywhere, nor any drop to drink" - By Liya Bobby

The famous lines from “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” by Samuel Coleridge, “ Water water everywhere, nor any drop to drink ” came to my mind as I read the article  “Castaway” by Kamini Mathai from Times Of India. This article tells us about nine brave men, who fought the sea for fifty five days with their firm determination, immense hope and inadequate resources. They set out for thirteen days fishing expedition from Chennai in July like any other fishermen. But little did they knew, that their life was going to turn upside down from this expedition. Just after two days from the day they set off, the engine of the boat stopped working and the fishing boat went adrift with sharks circling their boat. With no food left on board, they had to depend on their catch to survive. They tried drinking sea water to quench their thirst, but sea water made them sick and weak. As the days passed, they started to grow more ill, hallucinating talking with Yama (the God of death). Thankfully rain cam

A Battle against the Mighty Sea by Anjana S

As I read along the column titled 'Castaway' of Times of India published on 27th  October, I had a feeling of awe towards the nine fishermen who spent 55 days adrift in the Bay of Bengal. Their expedition was purely comprised of endurance. It is evident that 'hope' was their ultimate tool for surviving against the mighty sea.  The most heartbreaking part that is still dwelling in my mind is the death of Babu, the only fisherman who bestowed a ray of hope on his companions every time they broke down. No matter how hard I try, I can't stop comparing this incident with the poem 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner' by Coleridge. I keep visualizing Babu as the Albatross who served as a good luck charm to the Mariners when the ray of hope was lost in their lives. But just like the Albatross, he too came across an unfortunate death. However, I am sure that he will always remain alive in the hearts of his colleagues. After completely reading this article, I was remin

THE OPTIMISTIC LEADS TO THE SECOND LIFE, by Raichel C

It is very tough to survive in the middle of the sea without having any communication to the external word. The situation gets serious, when the fishermen is having a damaged boat. And they face scarcity of food. But the hope and confidence led them to the shore. It can be read as the true example of optimistic and hopeful waiting for the survival.

The voyage of hope-Gouri. R

This article is actually a story of rebirth gifted by hope. It concretes the fact that doors of hope never shuts down .It was a voyage through which they explored fear ,patience, hope and finally the potential to face improglios in life. As we always say "neccessity is the mother of inventions ",here they proved it by discovering new methods of getting food. When I was reading this article the person who was in my mind was Abhilash Tomy ,India's first solo circumnavigator of sea. So let me remind once again be hopeful always and wait for those miraculous doors to open...

Report on 'Castaway'

The article 'Castaway', published in the Times of India, tells the story of nine fishermen who got lost in the Bay of Bengal. Even when they were faced with almost certain death they didn't lose their hope. Even when all the odds were against them, they stuck together and remained as optimistic as they could be. Even after having such a harrowing experience at sea, having to fight loss of a friend and despair they trusted each other and remains hopeful of one day going back out into the sea.  - Sidharth G Kumar

IN THE DARING SEA by Nandanalakshmi

The life of a few people who strived so hard to hold their breathe in the extensive roaring sea, for about fifty five days - an incident that transpired recently and proliferated in the columns of all national dailies. Just like what happened in Coleridge’s “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner”, those nine men were surviving in the Bay of Bengal, even without having anything to satisfy their hunger or thirst. As days passed, there was no bit of food left, and again to add misfortunes upon misfortunes, they were even forced to imbibe the salty sea water. At last, after enormous days of fear and helplessness, the transitions converged to take their boat to an unknown land, where they used to sustain with the help of the tender hearted natives of Myanmar.  This incident delineates the victory of many moral values. One ,the greatest element of togetherness which let those hearts to join their hands even in struggles and hazards. Even the weak became stronger when they were united. And, the

Being an introvert is a good thing.

Image
On 29th of April 2016, A high school student, Crystal Robello successfully brought her dream to fruition when she stood on a TEDx talk platform and addressed the gathering about an epiphanic message which was 'Being an introvert is a good thing’. Talking to a huge audience, sharing thoughts and ideas was a challenge for Crystal as she was an introvert just like the 32.5% of people on this planet.  Crystal spoke about the harsh reality of how introverts are often degraded in the society. Since introverts are usually quiet and keep most of their opinions to themselves, the society discourages them as entities who will never achieve success in life. So, Crystal came up with arguments proving that there is nothing wrong in having an introverted mindset. She delivered the examples of eminent personalities like Albert Einstein, Mahatma Gandhi, Michael Jordan and Mark Zuckerberg who are introverted by nature and has reached the destiny of success in life.  She bestowed a motivational spir

Write-up about an article in today’s Times of India - By Fathima Heena Hasmi

Today, I came across an article in ‘Times of India’ which told the story of nine fishermen from Chennai adrift in the Bay of Bengal for 55 days. The article tells us how one among them went missing and how they survived in the Bay of Bengal for such a long period of time. Even being in such a terrible situation, they didn’t lose their hope. They kept telling themselves that “someone will find us. We have to keep the belief that we will go home”. They retained their life by eating dried fish and fishes boiled in salt water. They even faced situations which they run out of water and had to survive without a single pellet. After the life and death struggle long 55 days, they reached the hills of Myanmar and they had to point at their stomachs to show they were hungry. Then, the Navy of the new county was informed and the men were brought on shore. After reading the whole article, I felt so proud of that men. I strongly believe that it’s their optimism and bravery that acted as their savi

I was sinking  deeper into that dark sea- A solitary journey. The secrecy of that place was horrifying. I could see some lustrous thing rushing into me. And I discovered that, those were the pleasant thoughts on my mind, my only belongings in this entire life. Then I was aware of the lightness of my body.  I was trying to unshackle my nightmares. I sensed the energy of that shining one, since then I was forced to go above and I was following that current.

The Women Safety in India: An important matter that has to be addressed by Aishwarya Jijikumar

India -the largest democracy in the world. The land of religious and cultural diversities. We are a developing nation moving on at an aggravating pace inorder to be a devoloped nation. Over the decades that had gone by, our nation has achieved so much. But still, are we moving towards the right path?In my perspective it is not. Development is ensured not merely by the means of technological advances and infrastructures. Of course it is important, but we wholly attain development once when we realise the importance of voice of each other, when we respect each other and when we give due importance to everyone regardless of gender, race and religion. Unless, there is a barrier that separates us.                 The issue of women safety in India is a cause that has to be addressed more effectively. The heartwrenching stories of women who have been suffering atrocities of various intensities has began to occupy the headlines and editorials of national dailies nowadays. When many includin

The Dictator by Nandanalakshmi M

It was all in a rush, with darts of the dawn, and my routine was getting out of sway. I sensed someone beneath and behind me, who seemed to be an interloper at first. But, his stance was not just a commotion, Instead he twisted the rhythm of humanity. Meanwhile, someone called him a egoist who never wants to be in a throng,  unless and until he is invited. But the time was enough to conquer,  and he became the dictator of the universe. Everyone get confined within their corners, with no more commitments and emotions Only those corridors with odours of sedatives, had something to do in depth Atleast to sustain a few breathes! And now, the world realized that a transient, who just makes a momentary fluctuation, is indubitable to invade the essence of glories,  and it holds all transitions in the same knot ! The time has arrived to regain our spirit, but it should be with a reminder... Just a few droplets of the most uncared discharge  could invert the whole existence of our lifetime. Let

Little Things - By Liya Bobby

In today’s fast paced world, I believe we tend to forget to live for ourselves. We are pushed and forced to run with the pace, and so we do. But honestly if we think, what are we going to gain for pushing our lives like this? Are we seizing the day? Are we making it count? Are we living it to the fullest? Every night before you go to bed, is there something special your mind alerts you, that you could have done? Or even you should do in the future? I’ll tell you, that is your heart’s desire, which is something you should chase after. The world has been running at its fast pace chasing money, fame and comfort for long and it is not under our control. What we can do is to make a choice, a choice to run a little behind and enjoy what our Earth has offered to us while we can. Let us abandon our grudges and hate and focus on positivity and spreading love because life is too short to hold grudges against our foe.  We should take time to look at the serene blue sky, observe the green leaves a

It was something that stirred up a bunch of realizations when I watched the Ted talk of Joseph Annamkutty Jose. He is a reputed RJ as well as a public speaker and more beyond, he’s a person who is exceptionally adept in stimulating the mind and heart of people through his spellbinding words. Each and every second of his discourse was flourished with unique ideas and influential stories. “An extra eye, an extra ear and an extra heart” revolves upon the very miniscule or unnoticed events that can change the whole course of action in one’s life. Joseph was the only student in his entire institution to get failed in the internal examination. But, when his father discerned the unexpressed sorrow behind his fabricated smile, he tried to furnish confidence and make him much stronger by these words; “It is not about how much you fail in your life, instead it is about how much you rise up from those failures.” This manifested a different perspective to take all failures as a challenge and rei

Raichal C: A new Decision that can Make a Change

Image
Today, Sabu achan gave an assignment for all of us. Everyone has to write something in blog and post. I thought a subject to write about. But, I am not getting ideas. And I thought why it is so? It is perhaps the lack of general reading. And I am not having the experience of such writing. I do have the fear about my language. So, I decided to make a change of the habit. I will read whatever I get and will write whenever I get a chance. I think it will help to get rid of my fear and it will help me to improve my imagination. Here I begin my journey into the world of reading. Hope this decision will make a difference.

The Light of hope - By Sanjana Saji Nair

Image
Do you know what is that fuels a person to live on each day, each minute and each second? Its hope, the feeling of optimism and desire. It is the light which leads us through the pitch darkness of complexities in our lives. With hope, we go down different roads to see what is lying at the end. It is an assured fact that hope takes the pain from our inner selves and leads through the righteous path. It is pretty much the thing that tends us to wake up with a smile every morning. When we think a level up, we find that hope holds mysteries at the end. Even when we hope for the best we dont know what is waiting for us as time goes by. This very reason makes people to give up on everything when they stumble and fall in life. So along with optimistic thoughts, positive actions are a must. This helps us to match up with the rythm of life and brings the best results ever. Giving up seems to be easier than clinging on hope and going through the hardest moments. But always remember the night is

It also focuses on the importance of achieving goals in one's  life.  It is inspired from acid attacks against women and proves that  determination is the key to success. Determination helps us to  tackle obstacles in life.             The biggest strength of the movie lies in its screenplay .Parvathy proved to be an amazing actress through her matured performance. The film depicts the warm relationship between father and daughter. In this movie, flying can be treated as a metaphor for women. The soundtrack is breathtaking. MIRROR - By Fathima Heena Hasmi

The only time that she remembered herself was when she saw her reflection in the ‘mirror’. She remembered her happy childhood days when she used to play with her barbie doll and shared her thoughts with it. But during each stage of her growth the society started to judge her. They found mistakes in everything that she did. There were the society’s influence behind each and everything that she did. She did her best to be an ideal teen, but no one noticed her efforts except her parents. And then she decided “let the world say whatever they want”! And then she realised that, the first thing to do to stay happy is that to stop thinking what others say about her. The realisations that she made were: it’s okay to be imperfect, it’s okay to be independent, it’s okay to choose a different subject to study, it’s okay to choose her career by herself, it’s okay to travel alone, it’s okay to hangout with her loved ones, it’s okay to dress-up the way she wants, it’s okay to be skinny/chubby, it’s o
