Impactful Sentence from Roots - Sandra Santhosh

 Roots a short story written by Ismat Chughtai, is a fictional take on the impact of the Partition on interpersonal relationships, memory as well as the idea of ‘home’ and ‘community’. The narrative, which is seen from the perspective of an aged woman ‘Amma’, is an insight into how women experienced the Partition of India.

 Before the declaration of Independence of India and Pakistan, where migrations have already begun taking place. However, despite constant persuasion by her family members, Amma refuses to pack up her belongings and set off for another land. Evoking her emotional connection to where she was born, she is convinced that she should not leave with her family members. However, the reader gains an insight into the brutality of the experience as she experiences the pain and anguish of separation from her family members. Roopchand, who is unable to take the stomach this entire episode, decides to go to the station and bring Amma’s family back to their home. The story is an artful depiction of the resilience of love and mutual respect among two families. 


* The wretched urchins did not realize that the English had left and, while leaving, had inflicted such a deadly wound that would fester for years to come. 

The story begins with metaphor  that the children are referred to wretched urchins. The partition of India that resulted in communal riots and it's impact over the country. 

* I'm like a lamp in it's last gasp. A mild gust of wind all this fuss about choosing a land will be over. 

These words said by Amma when her family was trying to persuade her to move to Pakistan. Here Amma compares herself to the lamp and mild gust simile is used.

*Between these two flags, there was a chasm miles wide. 

This sentence conveys that how two family grew apart to the partition. The two different flags belongs to two different countries which had made two families apart and widened their relationship. 

* His special target was the vacant house that stood across the road and seemed to taunt him as though he had broken it, brick by brick, with his own hands. 

This statement shows Roopchandji compassion and sincerity towards Amma family. He is feeling regret for not to do anything for stop them. 

* Her restless eyes gazed helplessly towards the other side of the chasm. The house on the other side seemed as far as removed as a fleeting cloud in the distant sky.

This statement captures the picture of two families who lived with bond , love and unity which get widened due to communal problems.
