Untouched by Unrighteous - Liya Bobby

The Berlin Olympics of 1936 were a masterminded plan by Adolf Hitler to showcase and reaffirm his ideology of racial supremacy, which viewed the Aryan race as a distinct and superior racial group entitled to rule the rest of humanity. The Aryan supremacist ideology and German nationalism heightened to their peak of influence in Nazi Germany. But the same Berlin Olympics is now remembered as the summer when Jesse Owens, an American track and field athlete, crushed Hitler's racist supremacy.

Jesse Owens was an African American track and field athlete who specialized in sprints and long jump. His achievement at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany, by winning four gold medals: 100 meters, long jump, 200 meters, and 4 x 100-meter relay brought him international recognition and fame as a four-time gold medallist. Being a black man, he never doubted or judged his ability and was able to become the most successful athlete at the games, as he single-handedly crushed Hitler's myth of Aryan supremacy. Jesse Owens teaches us the foremost lesson to believe in ourselves and never question our ability, even when everything is at odds.

'My Greatest Olympic Prize' by Jesse Owens is an autobiographical account of his friendship with Luz Long. Long was a German athlete who stood by him like a true friend, giving suggestions, supporting and even sharing the joy when his competitor and friend won over him.  Luz Long is a reminder for us to rekindle our relationships over rivalries. Because even the epitome of success wouldn't be enough to quench man's never-ending thirst for more. And in the end, it is the loving memories and meaningful people that will matter more than any metrics of achievement.

"You can melt down all the gold medals and cups I have, and they couldn’t be a plating on the 24-carat friendship I felt for Luz Long at that moment." - Jesse Owens

Hence, both Owens and Long put forward a relevant message for us to believe in ourselves and to value true relationships. Even when the chances are bleak, one selfless act of valiance can be a glimmer of hope.
