India is a diverse country that emphasises on secularism but the nation still encounters with various communal violence and religious conflicts. Vikal Kumar was a popular Hindi poet who expressed the substandard state of the oppressed and marginalized society in his poetry. One of his poems, 'Can you make out' reveals the brutality of communal riots through a series of rhetorical questions. He argues whether anyone can recognise the community or religion of the people whose blood is being shed in a futile fight. The answer is definitely 'no'. He stresses that it is all about being humane and not about being a Hindi or a Muslim. The title of the poem too, holds immense significance as the bitter truth is that India has not yet discovered a solution to the problem of escaping this rampage. It is quite unfortunate to accept the reality that these riots doesn't seem like it is leaving the premises of the nation any time soon. Respecting every citizens' caste, creed...

The poem 'Can You Make Out 'by Kumar vikal unleashes  a storm of protest against centuries old but still persisting communal riots in India. Throughout its flow the Poem addresses the issue without losing its genuinity. It is written in the form of questions raised towards the humanity and the conclusion is trying to answer them. The questions that Kumar Vikal advocates is of real significance ,as the title Indicates Can you identify the religion of a person by the smell of his blood Splattered on the road. The answer here is pretty sure is a big 'No',because the riots and rebellions only last upto the death of a huge innocent public. As the poet admits here, the rebellious society that includes each one of us cannot answer for the tears of a mother . We cannot wipe them with the aid of sympathy but what we are able Of is to break the silence of centuries .Therefore, all together the poem is a bunch of questions answered with incomplete thoughts and a gentle reminder to t...

Significance of the title, “Can you make out”. - Sidharth G Kumar

The poem by Kumar Vikal, titled “Can you make out”, is a direct criticism on the communal atrocities committed in the name of religion, caste and beliefs and the effects these acts have on the people of the society at a large. The title itself is of the rhetorical kind, with the poet asking the readers if they are able to understand or decipher the meanings behind the various atrocities being described in the poem. The poem as a whole further explores the question raised by the titular question and attempts to provide suitable explanations for it but ultimately ends showing our inability to even attempt to justify some of the more heinous deeds and their consequences. The literary work holds a mirror up to society and its inability to understand that the only real sufferer in this pointless conflict is the common man, who in the race to find his daily bread and conquer his dream, happened to stand out in the eyes of his assailants.

Kumar Vikal was a famous Hindi Poet. Throughout his poems we could see his voice for marginalized oppressed societies. Can you make out is also tells us the same story of people who lost everything because of mad reckless riots which came from different entities. India is a land of diversities. And this unique feature of India could make India more proud and in the same time it could become a curse. Because each one of us has different entities such as caste, religion, believes,  culture, region and so on. It is really hard to maintain its inner peace. At times it will cost huge loss for our nation. The people don't know why they are fighting for. At last they are shedding their blood for these mere caste and other worthless stuffs. Then we cannot identify them by their caste or class.  We may be different according to our caste and religion but biologically we all are same - Homo sapiens. The person who set frontiers are none other than us. Until we break these shackles we ca...

Significance of The Title 'Can You Make Out' by Kumar Vikal - Liya Bobby

Can You Make Out by Kumar Vikal is a wonderfully crafted, heart touching and moving poem that reminds us to voice out the loud pertinent questions addressing Indian nationalism with its medley of people. The very title of the poem "Can you make out" arises the much-unspoken question that whether we could make out, to which caste, creed or religion the aftermath of these petty riots and outbreaks of  civil   violence belong.  It is truly saddening to see us making walls within ourselves, in the name of religion, caste and other fiddling differences when we all in core should be humans with humanity. In the occurrences of these instances, it should be us and our leaders, who should think and act sensibly when we all know that this hate and violence clearly ends up with pain, bloodshed and tears. Hence with the poet, it's high time we realize and respect our commonality as humans with the same blood in our veins than differentiating ourselves on the grounds of beliefs and id...

Significance of The Title Can You Make Out - Raichal C

The poet begins the poem with a list of questions, and the title also is a question, 'Can You Make Out'. The question is very relevant in our time and the answer should be the remedy for the troubles. He says we can not identify the caste of the blood by the smell. We can not see any creed in the shattered pieces of bread during a riot. We can not see a race or religion in the blood stained clothes after a calamity. But when we see the tears of a mother who is helpless and worries about the daughter who will never return, what will be our emotion and feeling. It will not be the thought of any caste or creed. Always we can see the victims are the common man who is struggling for their daily bread. We always see the pathetic reality of the wounded children who were suppose to be with their books and toys. At the end, the poet want us to light the lamp for peace. He want us not to see any religion in blood and tears. He blaims the meaningless, arguments of the society and u...
