"Water water everywhere, nor any drop to drink" - By Liya Bobby

The famous lines from “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” by Samuel Coleridge, “ Water water everywhere, nor any drop to drink ” came to my mind as I read the article  “Castaway” by Kamini Mathai from Times Of India. This article tells us about nine brave men, who fought the sea for fifty five days with their firm determination, immense hope and inadequate resources. They set out for thirteen days fishing expedition from Chennai in July like any other fishermen. But little did they knew, that their life was going to turn upside down from this expedition. Just after two days from the day they set off, the engine of the boat stopped working and the fishing boat went adrift with sharks circling their boat. With no food left on board, they had to depend on their catch to survive. They tried drinking sea water to quench their thirst, but sea water made them sick and weak. As the days passed, they started to grow more ill, hallucinating talking with Yama (the God of death). Thankfully rain came to their favor so they collected it for drinking. Finally, they saw hills upon the horizon and they reached the land unknown to them, Myanmar. On October 7, they returned to Chennai, traumatized but feeling thankful for their second life. The near-death experience and their fight with death is a true example for how courage, will power and hope can help one survive any problems and difficulties in life.
