The Petrichor Island by Nandanalakshmi M

The island of my dreams is quite beautiful with the green patches of nature and the embellished blue sky. It begins with a fresh dawn where streaks of sunlight gently come across the eyelids and rivers go along with crystal clear beats. It is enriched with the stream burbles as it travels along the river bed, and bubbles over rocks and branches. The ground spreads the odour of beautiful Madagascar jasmine that penetrates deep to the soil. Trees of its thick backwoods sway in the soft gale which leaves its ripening fruits on the ground making a rainbow carpet shielding the earth. Franklin Treeflowers, Firelilies and Chocolate Cosmos bloom regardless of spring or autumn, making the odd dragonflies and peppered moths to gallivant around.

The island has abundant vegetation including wide varieties of shrubs, herbs and tropical rainforests. The mountains are covered with evergreen woods, which give life to hundreds of exotic species. Its ambiance is replenished with gentle winds that accompany the pelting rain. Since the land is purely brimming in the adorable rainfall, it smells deeply like rain. The earthly smell after rain touches all its corners thereby naming the island as "Petrichor". Petrichor is crammed with short hills that reflect the golden radiations of the rising sun. Every dawn looks as if the hills are bursted in glittering oceans, and each dusk makes it dark as seaweed. Nature is the ultimate healer of the island that pours fresh droplets over one's heart.

Petrichor island supports only a few human inhabitants as it is critically prone to heavy cloudburst and downpour. But, the people living there currently sustains with the foodcrops available from their river side cultivation. They fetch fruits, nuts and other basic requirements from the forest. The major challenge of the people is that it is so hard to be isolated from the rest of the world, as there won't be any means of proper rehabilitation in case of an unprecendented calamity. Rare fruits, bamboo products and honey are marketed outside the island. Wide varieties of medicinal plants and herbs are collected by outsiders for pharmaceuticals. Moreover, certain visits from the foreigners and documentaries based on the mesmerising island draws the public attention towards this unseen miracle.

Earth has many things that might be unknown to us. But once known, it can grab our senses so as to take us again and again allied with such beauties that lead to explore the unfelt. Its true that the unvariably unique structure and essence of the Petrichor island makes it pretty distinctive from the rest of the world. And, there's no greater beauty or charm than what we can find in nature.
