The Spirit of True Championship by Aishwarya Jijikumar

In this contemporary world the term champion is open to many meanings and interpretations but everyone perceives it to be being the first in everything. The real sense of championship lies in upholding and supporting each other regardless of their state and stature. The story “My Great Olympic Prize” and the video (about Abel Mutai and Ivan Fernandez)  proves that the crowning achievement of one's ability lies in ungrudging selflessness for others. Their story proved to be a ray of hope to the world shattered by inequality, racism and  disparities of such sorts.

In the story “My Great Olympic Prize”, Jesse Owens admits that it is the broad mindedness and companionship of his German rival Luz Long that inspired him to bring out the best within himself. Indeed Owens  regards his undying friendship with Long as his greatest prize rather than his record of winning four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The incident that happened during  a racing event at Burlada Navarre in December 2012 too shares resemblance with Jesse Owens story. Here Abel Mutai could have lost to his Spanish opponent Ivan Fernandez if the mistake done by him have not been corrected by the latter. Ivan Fernandez displayed tremendous honesty when he refused to take advantage of the mistake of his fellow opponent Mutai. Thus it is not just the winning that counts, it is the legacy of unselfish acts that marks the difference. Both Luz Long and Ivan Fernandez were rightful winners.

When humanity is driven by the competitive desire to be the first, the tales of Luz Long and Ivan Fernandez stands as the metaphor of upholding their fellow beings till posterity. It is their positive affirmations which helmed them towards praise and recognition. Through their story it is revealed that necessarily no one needs to be the first inorder to be a true champion.

“Victory is remembered for at most two decades; an act of good sportsmanship is remembered for a lifetime”.
