A true friend by Raichal C

The sporting spirit is another name of sportsmanship. It means the fair, honest, earnest and generous way in which a game is played. The best players all over the world play the game with the sporting spirit. In the play field sportsmanship is needed most. The law of game requires that we should play in a fair manner. We must not take an undue advantage of our opponents; nor should we try to deceive them.

The essay is set in the background of the Berlin Olympics in 1936. It provides an autobiographical insight by Jesse Owens of his experience during the Olympics that year. He met a German athlete Luz Long with whom he formed a bond of friendship even though they were rivals. Luz Long helped Jesse Owens to clear the jump trials. True friendship and true sportsmanship are the themes of this essay.

Hitler believed in the theory of Aryan supremacy. According to him, the Germans were the purest stock of Aryans and were meant to be the purest race in all of humanity and Owens wanted to prove him wrong. But the performance that Owens gave during trials was not up to the mark. Even though both Luz long and Jesse Owens were rivals, Luz Long encouraged Jesse Owens in a very good way before his performance at the Olympic Games. Despite the fact that Luz Long came in the second position he congratulated Jesse Owens from his heart. Jesse Owens valued true friendship, more than the medals he received and the records he broke during his sports carrier because he had a friend like Luz Long. There could be many reasons for this but it is to be noted that true friendship is priceless and cannot be valued or weighed by any measurement unit or standard. Long’s friendship and being congratulated by him was of greater value to Owens than the gold medal, and hence, Owens refers to it as his greatest prize.

In my opinion, both Luz Long and Jesse Owens are the best examples of a good sportsmen. Their story showed that the important thing in sports is not winning but taking part and the essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well. Actually, there was not even a small benefit for Luz Long if he supported Jesse Owens but even though he supported him. He made Mr. Owens believe that he was capable of doing great things. This shows the great heart that Luz long had. This story gives a powerful message about how to be a true friend and a true sportsman. Also, it gives a lesson that we should be broadminded and give away the feelings of hatred or prejudices.
