An act of humanity by Anjana S

Jesse Owens' staggering tally of four medals at the 1936 Olympics was a fitting response to Hitler and shattered his idea of using the event for the Nazi regime. While Owens’ feat was unique, he might have lost one of his gold medals had it not been for the help from an unlikely ally – German long jumper Luz Long.

When Owens was struggling to qualify the trial round for a long jump event, Long compelled him to give his best and shared the right advices to excel the jump. Though Long was competing in the same event as an official representative of Hitler himself, he showed no fear in befriending Owens. In the finals, Jesse won his gold medal but the friendship he formed with Long was his greatest Olympic prize.

Luz Long's conduct was the defining moment in the 1936 Olympics. In the many years that followed and probably for many more years to come, he will definitely be remembered as the person who embodied the Olympic spirit. Hence, this tale of humanity will remain glorious in  history forever.
